Garage Remote
The garage remote control is what allows a homeowner to open the garage from inside the vehicle. They usually work much like a television remote control, by using infra-red beams to communicate with the door opener. These remotes generally have one button that is used to both open and close the door.
The first garage remote controls were roughly the size of a deck of cards and were designed to clip onto the visor. While this type of remote is still available today, keychain-size versions are quite common now. Keychain remotes often include a small LED flashlight as well.
If you need to purchase a replacement for the garage remote that came with your system, you will need to know the exact make and model of your garage door opener. Some aftermarket remotes are universal, or programmable, but not all. Purchasing the incorrect remote is a common mistake that is easily avoided.
